The collection is divided into two parts. The first part contains papers that pertain to McDermott's pastorate of Presbyterian Churches in Illinois. It consists of annual reports, notes, clippings, correspondence, photographs, leaflets, newsletters, directories, bulletins, certificates, lists, pamphlets, articles, reprints, maps, memoranda, programs, and minutes. This part contains information on the services, activities, and problems of the Churches that McDermott served as an interim pastor. The second part contains the short stories and feature articles that McDermott wrote for national and religious magazines. It consists of clippings, articles, pamphlets, notes, correspondence, telegrams, press releases, lists, reports, photographs, newsletters, bulletins, speeches, programs, leaflets, receipts, memoranda, questionnaires, fliers, by-laws, postcards, books, invoices, and regulations.

The Transylvania Presbytery was organized by appointment of the synods of New York and Philadelphia. The Synod of New York made part of the Presbytery of Abingdon into the Transylvania Presbytery, which encompassed the district of Kentucky and the settlements on the Cumberland River.
